Baseball needs tweeking

Hello Again,

I read with great consternation that Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig was just granted a 3-year extension through 2009. This comes less than 3 months after he said that he wouldn't serve past 2006. Previously, he said that he wouldn't serve past 1998. What a politician he would make! In spite of his questionable leadership, baseball is in good, if not great shape. The NFL & NBA have clearly surpassed baseball in popularity and Selig must bear the blunt of the blame. If I were Commissioner (I would).....

Expand to 32 teams, and divide them into 4 eight-team leagues with two 4-team divisions each.....The first 8 expansion teams would make up the third league (Angels, Rangers, Mets, Astros, etc.) and the most recent 8 the fourth league.....Expand the playoffs to 12 teams.....Reduce the regular season to around 150 games.....Keep interleague play, it was long overdue when it was implemented.....Return All Star voting to the players, coaches & managers.....Implement revenue sharing a la the NFL.....That's what allows the Green Bays to compete on a level playing field with the New Yorks.....Make Shoeless Joe Jackson eligible for the Hall of Fame.....And lobby for the removal of KM Landis, Charles Comiskey, Cap Anson, and other scoundrels.....For better or worse, Pete Rose also should be eligible.....He did have more hits than anybody else.....I don't believe he ever threw a game.....Ban artificial surfaces & future domed stadiums.....Retractable roof ballparks are ok.....Give the team with the better record automatic home field advantage in all postseason series, including & especially the World Series.....Have more than one broadcast network televise games.....Charge a hefty relocation fee, say $25 million or so, to owners who want to move their teams.....Get Washington, DC back in the majors, Peter Angelos be damned.....Find a way to keep Montreal in, the players & fans there deserve better.....Require all teams to employ an organist.....Install a 20-second pitch clock behind home plate, a la the NBA's shot clock, and charge a pitcher with a ball if he hasn't thrown a pitch within that time.....Limit season ticket sales to 40% of each park.....Make the Designated Hitter optional for each game, but he must bat ninth in the lineup.....Otherwise, dump the DH.....Require all teams to have player's names on the back of their jerseys, even the Yankees.....Implement a yellow card-red card system a la soccer to discourage early ejections of star players.....Fans don't pay to see umpires.....Revive Ewing Kaufman's idea of a Baseball Academy.....Form a women's league in smaller markets, a la the WNBA.....Announce attendence figures as tickets used that particular game, not tickets sold or paid attendence.....Change the designation of "modern era" of baseball from 1900 to 1946.....I don't think pre-WW2 baseball records should be compared to present day.....The game was so different then.....Legalize the spitter & corked bats.....Eliminate the Retaliation Rule.....It was well-intentioned, but gives an unfair advantage to the team whose pitcher threw at somebody first.....Permanently ban for life any player found to be using steroids.....Require base coaches & ballboys to wear helmets.....Make teams either raise the first row of seating or the railing in outfield corner seats so that fans won't be able to grab a ball in play.....Suspend any player who deliberatly injures another for as long as the injured player is out.....Strongly encourage White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf to get the hell out of the game.....He virtually single-handedly caused the strike of 1994, that wiped out the season & the World Series.....He & Selig are bosom buddies.....Have the Commissioner host a weekly national call-in radio show.

Whenever Commissioner Selig does step down, I'll let Major League Baseball know of my availability! Play Ball!
Thank You, AOL, for not booting me this time!

One of the demands I tried to sell to the organizers of one of the last "fan strikes" was the following:

Every major league baseball team should reserve 10% of its seating for day of game only seats to be sold at no higher than the minimum hourly wage in the community where they are located.

The idea was that joe six pack would only have to give up 5 or 6 hours worth of wages to take his family to the ballpark.

*Gideon, that's a good idea that Selig and his lackeys should consider. Baseball, I'm afraid, at least at the Major League level, is slowly pricing the working class out. At Dodger Stadium, parking alone costs $10! Outrageous. I like to think Walter O'Malley, with all of his greed & faults, wouldn't have done that.

Fans need to organize, otherwise owners of sports teams everywhere will walk all over them on their way to their private boxes.

Strongly encourage White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf to get the hell out of the game.....He virtually single-handedly caused the strike of 1994, that wiped out the season & the World Series

One of the games I had the honor and luck of attending was what would turn out to be Carlton Fisk's last night in the majors. It was the night Fisk surpassed Bob Boone's games caught record, and it was designated "Carlton Fisk appreciation night", and as it also happened to be payday, wild horses weren't keeping me from that game. Reinsdorf rewarded Fisk for his service and loyalty to the White Sox by releasing him two days later unceremoniously and without a chance to play again. For that, I have never forgiven Reinsdorf.

*Gideon, Jerry Reinsdorf is pure scum. One of the reasons baseball seems so tainted at times is his contamination of it. He & Charles Comiskey are cut of the same rotten cloth. I usually root for the American League in the World Series, but if the Chisox were to somehow make it that far with that awful owner, I would root for the NL team. I forget the exact year, but I'll never forget the time his team was leading the AL West by a good margin--and he holds a fire sale! Of course the pale hose sank the rest of the way. If only Bill Veeck was still around.

Another favorite Reinsdorf anecdote is him complaining to Peter O'Malley about his boyhood team, the Brooklyn Dodgers moving, just as he was threatening to move the White Sox to Tampa Bay if he didn't get a new stadium! He even had a Florida White Sox logo designed!

I wish he would say the wrong thing to Evander Holyfield in an elevator.

I usually root for the AL as well (diehard M's fan that I am I change my tune only if AL West opponents or the Yankees are the AL representative), but I may switch allegiance this year if the Cubbies make it, as I think Boston gets the bonehead move of the year (and the Cubs may, just may, have found their way into "next year".

Anyway, sorry about the brief thread hijack, lol...but, when I find a fellow baseball fan, I'm prone to tangents (as any good fan is, I believe).

OH here is your baseball blog! I can't speak for all ball parks because I didn't get into baseball until I moved out here. Safeco field is awesome and there isn't a bad seat there. The prices are reasonable, the food prices are out of the ball park as is parking, but all in all it is a good time. We spent a mothers day there one year and it was one of the best ever.

As a side note..I will Edgar Martinez!

Sadly, I have not been to the Safe. I lived in Tacoma in the years 1988-91 (was a clubhouse "rat" for the then-Tacoma Tigers [A's affiliate at the time; now they are the Rainiers and M's affiliate]). I watched the "becoming" of the Mariners; from the abyssmal (we paid WHAT for Pete O'Brien?") to the inspired (Kenny Phelps for Jay Buhner....betcha Steinbrenner loved THAT one) to the ones we thought were abyssmal that later proved to be inspired (a LOT of protests over Mark Langston for Randy Johnson). Then, it was under the concrete sky that was the Kingdome; the best thing the M's ever did was imploding that thing on national TV so the rest of us could enjoy it!

Anyway, now that I'm back "out west", I do intend to make it to the Safe someday."

Gid..you definitly have to go check it out. I am on the east side of the state but we make a point to go over there at least once during the season and hope for more.
My boys love it and get to see the players close up before the games warming up.

I'm also dismayed to see Selig sticking around (way past his welcome in my book). Don't know about all your ideas, but I very much support the idea of putting a limit on % of season's ticket sales.
I also like these very much -

Return All Star voting to the players, coaches & managers

Really, that's the way to go. I do like having every team represented on the All Star squads, though.

Give the team with the better record automatic home field advantage in all postseason series, including & especially the World Series

This is a no brainer, as far as I'm concerned.

Require all teams to have player's names on the back of their jerseys, even the Yankees

Especially the Yankees!

Not a fan of this one, though -

nstall a 20-second pitch clock behind home plate, a la the NBA's shot clock, and charge a pitcher with a ball if he hasn't thrown a pitch within that time

I don't mind the current pacing. I like the subtle war between the pitcher, batter, and umpire. And it allows warm-up time for an RP at times. I do remember reading (or maybe hearing) somewhere that there is an official time limit between pitches and it's the home plate umpires duty to keep track of it, but throws to first and visits to the mound get around that already (don't know if there's a penalty, even if you get caught, but the 1 ball rule seems good). I don't think it would change much if you added a pitch clock. But hey, that's just me...

*Gideon, Hijack the thread anytime you feel like it! I think the real curse of the Red Sox was the too-long Yawkey ownership, just as the Autry ownership, as pleasant as it was, kept the Angels from winning a title for sooo long. I feel that now that the Bosox have more modern ownership, titles just might be in their future.

Unless they were playing the Angels or Yankees, my two fave teams, I don't think I could root against the Cubs in a World Series.

*Kelly, I hope someday to take in a game at the Safe. A cousin of mine took in a game at the Kingdome some years back and he said that if that's indoor baseball, he wants nothing more to do with it. As I've mentioned before, I think much better days are ahead for the M's!

*Chip, perhaps I should make two amendments: First, have the 20-second clock going only when the bases are empty. The cat-and-mouse games between pitcher and base runner should not be intruded upon by a clock.

Second, instead of having just one All Star Game, have 3 of them. Here's how it would work. Since I've already divided MLB into 4 leagues, have 4 seperate All Star teams, and initiate a 3 game single elimination tournament. It could be done within the present framework of the All Star break.

You make some very good points. As Always, Anne

Anne,

Here's a quick tale relating to one of your Angels (and why I reluctantly root for them if the M's are out of it).

I lived in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where Jarrod Washburn played college ball. I worked with the developmentally disabled, and one of the gentlemen I worked with was a huge baseball fan, and had sort of been "adopted" by the coach, Tom Lechnir, and the players throughout the years. When the Titans won the Div III baseball championship (I believe during Washburn's years there), they pitched in and bought the young man his very own championship ring!

(Washburn is also very highly regarded in Oshkosh, as he contributed $1 million towards the building of a new stadium for the team. You guys are lucky to have him).

That would be very fun! I think most fans would love that idea!

*Gideon, there is nothing I can write that could add to what you just wrote. Jarrod is a class act on and off the field. We are indeed lucky to have him.

Great info feed, Gideon. As Always, Anne

*Chip, I think that could concievably go over with the fans, and make the players actually care about being an All Star instead of looking for a way out during those 3 days like they do now.
