I thought it was the University of New Orleans that were the Privateers? Guess there's two.

And i didn't see the University of Utah Running Utes on your list. Or to Quote Fred Gwynne in "My Cousin Vinnie"....What's a Yoot?

God post yet again Anne

Whittier, Ca (college) Poets.....

I'm sorry, but that is just too soft for football! They can't give them a sissy name.
I still loved reading the names though.
Good job Anne...

*thatoneguy, I'm still wondering what a Hokie is! I'm very surprised that the University of Utah isn't a bigger national power with that town (I like Salt Lake City), that great school and those facilities. TYVM for the nice words. --Anne

*Kelly, Whittier is an old school, founded in 1887. Richard Nixon was an alum. They've been playing football since about 1905. They've always been the Poets! One of their league rivals is Pomona-Pitzer, located in Claremont, about 30 miles from LA. They're called the Sagehens! Kris Kristofferson played fullback for them in the 50's. How about being a football player for the Delaware Blue Hens?! BTW, Nixon did play football for the Poets, but I don't know if he lettered or not. TY for the nice words, Kelly. --Anne

PS--One of my favorite all-time sports stories involves a Junior College in Arizona in the 60's. The school was just opening its doors, and the administrators had already alloted an obscene amount of money to the football program before the school even had it's first day of classes. Many other departments were going without proper funding. When school did open up, a referendum was held by angry students, and as a result, students voted pink & grey as the school colors, and chose as the school nickname The Fighting Artichokes! I think they got their message across! --AA

This was a fun post to read. My high school was the tornadoes. Also the Heidelberg College is in my hometown, Tiffin, Ohio.

UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs

one of my three nephews (lets call em hughie, dewey & louis) graduated from ucsc 3 years ago; a second is matriculating (hahaha im so tempted) there now.  i cant imagine a more appropriate place for either kid nor team nickname for that particular campus..

*Thatoneguy, I checked & doublechecked, NYU is definitly the Privateers, along with UNO, so there are most assuredly two of 'em!

*Locamama, thank you. Mine was the Toreadors, and that's no bull. I'll bet Heidelberg College is very scenic. Maybe Paramount would have had better luck if they had filmed The Prince & Me, one of moviedom's biggest recent bombs, there. I think that the Student Prince nickname is very cool & unique.

*Unca Kingbee, the legacies are just beginning! Bet you would be a great guest lecturer there!

As Always, Anne
