Hello Again,

Thursday was Strange with a capital S.....Everyone I encountered was NICE!.....Traffic was a breeze, for once in a lifetime.....Other drivers were polite.....People I've traded barbs with were pleasant and friendly.....Even the LAPD, long notorious for their rudeness, was cordial.....While stopped at a red light next to a black & white, the cop in the passenger seat nodded hello & tipped his hat.....You could have knocked me over with a feather.....Not one unpleasant incident or rude person all day.....WHAT'S WRONG WITH EVERYONE TODAY?.....Did the planet go through some kind of cosmic dust cloud?.....A sign of the Apocalypse, perhaps?.....Hell freezing over?.....This is supposed to be Los Angeles, perhaps the rudest city on Earth.....Enjoy it while you can, Anne, it won't last.....John Elway was the most awesome quarterback, ever.....Anyone in Cleveland can tell you that.....Story in Thursday's LA Times said that nowadays people can't give Beanie Babies away.....How times have changed.....Diahann Carroll recently turned 69.....And is better looking than women 1/3 her age.....Europe has had the vast majority of Olympic Games.....I'm glad I was too young to see The Waltons during its network run.....Looks like a show that would have made me sick.....I wish I could have seen Mickey Mantle play.....I think Fear Factor is a dumb show.....The USC Trojans take on the Virginia Tech Hokies Saturday.....What's a Hokie?.....I remember Hokey Wolf cartoons from Hanna-Barbera.....I don't think it's quite the same thing.....I miss The Weakest Link.....That British lady was funny.....Is Madagascar participating in these Olympics?.....I thought Ted Turner's Goodwill Games, an alternative to the Olympics, was a good idea.....Turner killed them because they were a dollar drain.....Do people still use Polaroid cameras?.....Personal observation: Latina women wear red better than anyone else.....Former names of the team known as the Dodgers: Bridegrooms, Superbas, Robins & Trolley Dodgers.....Former names of the team known as the Yankees: Baltimore Orioles (the original), NY Highlanders.....NY Highlanders has a nice ring to it, no?.....Former names of the group known as the Beatles: Johnny & The Moondogs, The Quarrymen, The Nurk Twins, The Silver Beatles.....What's a Nurk?.....You couldn't go through life without knowing those facts.

Thank you for reading. As Always, Anne Alogy

Excellent article, anne, as always. Myself, I would have loved to have watched 1 game of the Seattle Pilots' season; it would have been worth it to say I was there.

*King, I've lived in LA my entire life, done a little traveling, and believe me, there's no place like home when it comes to rudeness! On my recent trip to New York, I was met with politeness everywhere! I've never, ever seen a friendlier ballpark than Yankee Stadium. The Middle Eastern Cabbie who drove me the only time I used a cab gave me a huge break on the fare, and was very helpful! The man in the Subway booth went out of his way to make sure I'd get the right trains to Yankee Stadium. I sincerely hope that New York gets the 2012 Olympics, if they really want it there. I just couldn't picture all those courtesies here.

I think that Anne Robinson, The Weakest Link host, would have given me the once over, shaken her head, and mumble "Not a bloody chance!" -- Anne

*Gideon, It may please you to know that Jimbouton.com has links to Seattle Pilots web sites. They're out there! There's pictures of Sicks Stadium, audio of Jimmy Dudley calling Pilot games on the radio, you can download the Pilots' fight song (!), get updates on Pilots players, and you can see present day pics of the Sicks Stadium site! There is a plaque where home plate was. Go there!
My father, a big baseball freak, has a Seattle Pilots button. I saw one selling on Ebay for $25! -- Anne

Very cool.

Incidentally, my favorite bit of trivia...

Diego Segui (father of David Segui) played the last game for the Pilots and the first game for the Mariners...

Thanks to Dave Neihouse for that one.

*Gideon, Dave Neihouse was LA's gift to Seattle. He was an announcer on Rams, Angels & UCLA games on the original KMPC here. Another station here is using those call letters now, & I think that's obscene, but I digress.
Max & Dewey Soriano, Marvin Milkes, and Joe Schultz are to blame for the Pilots demise. They were a great lesson in what not to do. Did you read Ball Four, by Jim Bouton? Schultz was a joke as managers go, and Milkes was totally clueless as GM. Aw, shitfuck. (often quoted Schultz catch phrase in Ball Four.)

Sorry Anne...JOE MONTANA is the greatest QB ever! Elway was pretty damn good, but he played for the Broncos....
on Aug 28, 2004
Thanks for the bit of trivia on Neihouse, who is, of course, legend in my mind (as I lament the fact that the last of the "Lefebvre's beliebvre's" to remain with the team is retiring at the close of the season). I will definitely look for that book, thanks for the recommend.

*Thatoneguy, Elway had far more classic games than Montana did. Look at the talent Joe had around him. John had less to work with. Joe had a virtual All-Pro team surrounding him on the 49rs. Plus, like yours truly, John Elway hails from the San Fernando Valley! Let's just say that John Elway was the most awesome, and that Joe Montana was the greatest! Works for me! --Anne

*Gideon, you are more than welcome! You'll enjoy reading it! It may also interest you to know that a book about the original KMPC (The Station of the Stars) will soon be out, complete with a CD of KMPC classic moments. Gary Owens, Wink Martindale, Bob Crane, Dick Enberg & Jim Lange, among many, many others worked there. I'm guessing that the CD will include Dave Niehaus calling an Angel, Ram or Bruin game. I'll keep ya posted! Stay tuned, --Anne
PS- The latest spelling of Dave Niehaus' name is correct. The previous error was mine. --AA

lol...I didn't even notice I mangled Neihaus' name the second time...I knew better...musta been subliminal...lol.

Incidentally, part of my adoration for the "Lefebvre's beliebvres" crew came after reading Jay Johnstone's book, "Some of my Best Friends are Crazy" (a must read if you haven't read it!). Lefevre's father had a good deal to do with improving Johnstone's batting skills, and a lot of that transferred onto the younger Lefebvre.
on Aug 28, 2004
err, I mangled it all THREE times...now I must write it on the board a hundred times...lol
on Aug 28, 2004

*Gideon, you don't have to sell me on Jay Johnstone. Let's just say that I know enough about him to know that in addition to being a funny man, he's also very intelligent! And, a class act. Next time I talk to him, I'll ask him if he has any extra copies of his book laying around!

Don't worry, I'll be right next to you at the blackboard! I'm just as guilty!

As Always, Anne
